Does every classroom need a behavior contest?
The short answer is "no." An effectively managed classroom doesn't need a contest for behavior. There are lots of ways to create a disciplined classroom. Watch our Classroom Management workshop to find out how.

Which subjects benefit from contests?
Contests work well for subjects that require rote practice, such as shorashim, Kriah, handwriting, multiplication, etc.
How long should a contest last?
Design your contest to last 4-6 weeks. This allows weaker students to reach the goal, while celebrating before the class loses their enthusiasm.
When should I introduct my contest?
Don't jump into a contest before you get to know your class!
It's best to wait until after Sukkos when you have a better idea where they could use the extra motivation.
What should my contest criteria be?
Be specific!

Like this: Points will be given for: Eyes in the siddur, sitting with derech eretz, saying the words out loud

Not this: All girls who daven with kavana get 20 points.
How will I know who deserves to win?
Use measurable criteria.

Like this: Anyone who receives at least 100 points by the end of the contest will win a prize.

Not this: The best in davening will get a prize
How hard should it be to win?
The goal should be achievable by every student

Like this: Anyone who receives at least 100 points by the end of the contest will win a prize.

Not this: The first to receive 100 points will win a prize.
